the Fourth Grade Soil education Program

CSCD partners with the Fair Hill Nature Center to administer a 4th Grade Soils Program.  This program provides an educational opportunity to every 4th grade class in the county.  Students embark on a hike to explore soils based upon varying geology and topography within the Fair Hill Natural Resource Management Area (FHNRMA).  Spades and hand augers are utilized to provide students with a hands on experience.  In addition, students participate in multiple erosion, absorption and weatherization experiments, and view soil horizons. Students are presented historical photographs of a flood at the Nature Center and learn the importance of watershed management and the impacts from various land uses. The young “Soil Scientists” see and touch fossils and investigate how man-made materials decompose in the soil.
